Dancing through the COVID-19 pandemic

Dancing through the COVID-19 pandemic

COVID-19 hit the dancing world hard. But as dancers do, we adapted and transferred classes online so we could continue to dance (even if it was in our living rooms).

Whilst NSW was in lockdown and studios were shut, it gave people a lot of downtime to settle into the new ‘normal’ of being house bound and not being allowed to go anywhere for the foreseeable future. Suddenly we were dealing with things that weren’t the norm, like being able to watch Home and Away at 7pm every night or taking the dog for a walk when you would usually be at dancing!

But now that we're allowed back in the studio (with COVID restrictions) let us remind you why dancing is so important for your physical and mental health at all times, but ESPECIALLY during the pandemic.

1. It gets you out of the house

This is one of the biggest reasons dancing is so beneficial not only physically, but also mentally. Being stuck at home can quite literally drive you crazy, so having a reason to get out of the house, get a change of scenery and to socialise is so important to maintain a bit of normality in this crazy time.

2. Dancing is great exercise

Dancing is such a great form of exercise to get those endorphins pumping through you and get your body moving. There are only so many Netflix series you can binge watch before you truly become one with the lounge. A one-hour cardio and strength workout in your chosen dance style gets your body moving so you can stay fit and healthy during a time where health is so important.

3. Dancing friends are friends for life

Dance friends are friends for life. You really have a special bond with the friends you make at dancing. Some of them you met in your first tap class at 3 years old and the rest is history! Seeing your friends during the time of COVID is important for your mental health and well being, so you have people to reach out to if the pandemic is affecting you mentally.

Although we’re socially distanced and it is not business as usual, there is nothing quite like the feeling of dancing with your friends in the same room and not through a computer screen.

4. Dancing is FUN!

While the world seems to be crashing and burning around us, it’s important to have a bit of fun and light in your life. Even a couple of hours a week where you can escape the negative news, be in the moment and just dance will do wonders for your mental health.

Whether dancing is a side hobby or a future career, we promise you that whether it’s 20 classes or 2, sticking with dancing and staying in your community will benefit you physically and mentally during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
